The Genesis X Speedium Coupé concept was unveiled in April, but we are only now taking a look at its interior.

Luxury brand Hyundai first showed the interior of the electric concept coupe at the 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the flagship event of Monterey Car Week. And it looks ready for production.

“The interior captures the Genesis brand’s ‘Beauty of White Space’ design ethic, which fits into various luxury lifestyles and adds to the appeal of GT dynamics,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis Chief Creative Officer. It is inspired by Korean architecture.

The designers have given the Genesis X Speedium Coupé an asymmetrical interior design with a driver-oriented layout that, according to the company, aims to amplify the driving experience of electric vehicles. Most of the instruments and controls face the driver, with some of those elements mounted on a spine that divides the driver and front passenger sides of the cockpit. These two sides are further delimited by contrasting colors, Pinegrove Green for the driver’s side and Monterey Gold for the passenger side.

The driver gets an OLED display with graphics that make a clear break with the gauges found in internal combustion cars, says Genesis. A vertical screen on the center stack handles most of the control functions and the driver also touches the screen to start the car.

Genesis has partnered with Metal Sound Design on the sound system, which includes aluminum tweeters that have been precision milled to optimize sound performance, the automaker says. The speakers have also been strategically placed for optimal sound. Genesis said this work was done to explore the future of audio experiences.

The interior also features traditional quilted leather upholstery, as well as cut leather salvaged from old car seats and reused to cover the steering wheel. Genesis used vegetable tanned leather treated with substances of vegetable origin, as well as breathable grain leather. The latter requires less water and chemicals to manufacture, Genesis says.

Meanwhile, the exterior is an evolution of the muscle stance of the 2021 Genesis X concept, with a fastback profile similar to the 2019 and 2018 Essentia Mint concepts. None of those previous concepts have made it to production and we don’t even see it with the X Speedium Coupé. Genesis said the concept is a design statement that doesn’t involve a specific production model.

Genesis plans to become a fully electric brand, with a range of six models by 2030. It has already launched the GV60 crossover and an electric version of the G80 sedan, with an electric version of the GV70 crossover to follow soon. A bigger electric SUV than the GV80 is also planned.
